The Institute of Sociology, UwB, was founded in the year 1998. Its current educational activity includes full-time undergraduate (1st cycle/Bachelor) and graduate (2nd cycle/Master) studies. It also offers PhD (3rd cycle) studies which are tailored for graduates in the social sciences.

The scope of research conducted by the academic staff of the Institute includes transformations of the contemporary Polish society – in the broad sense of the term, with a focus on the systemic change, intercultural dialogue, cultural aspects of the social structure and new social divisions. Other research fields include processes of social integration, global culture and the new media. A special place in the academic activity is dedicated to the domain of borderland and multicultural studies which correspond with the cultural characteristics of the region.

The studies are designed for students who want to expand their horizons, explore the fundamentals of interpersonal relations, develop their communication skills and competence in methodology, scrutinize the rules of psychology and social philosophy as well as collective and institutional behavior. Students will also acquire practical skills during their undergraduate studies thanks to practical modules and – in the course of graduate studies – thanks to specializations and internships.
